Inner City Walk
Sunday 24 June 2007, 14.00-16.00 hours
Costs: € 0 per person
The inner city walk offers a very good introduction to the architecture
of Rotterdam. It will give you an overall impression of the constantly
changing ideas about the layout of Rotterdam - from business centre to
shopping centre and residential area. More than half a century of labour
has gone into the innovative and daring architecture of the city’s centre
and still inner city development is in full motion.
The main aim of the walk is to illustrate the visible results of decisions
made by the city council regarding the city’s interior. These include
the large-scale building projects of the 1950’s and 60’s and the renovation
and small-scale building during the 1970’s and 80’s. Finally you will
see the high-rise buildings constructed from 1990 until the present day,
where once again great interventions are expected as well as changes to
housing policy.

take you through the largest harbour of Europe and past the many attractive
sights of Rotterdam.

Conference dinner Laurenskerk Rotterdam
Wednesday 27 June 2007, 19.30 hours
Location: Laurenskerk
Costs: € 0 (Offered by the Municipaity of Rotterdam)
Built between around 1449 and 1525, the Laurenskerk is the only surviving
late-Gothic building from Rotterdam’s mediaeval origins. For many people,
the Laurenskerk is symbolic of the city’s history. In the Middle Ages,
for example, citizenship of Rotterdam could be acquired by contributing
3000 stones to the construction of the tower. The images of the heavy
damage sustained by the church in the second world war and its reconstruction
afterwards became a symbol for the fate of the city and its inhabitants.
Even now, the Laurenskerk retains its imposing character among all the
modern architecture in what is today known as ‘Manhattan on the Maas’.
Inside its monumental walls three impressive organs, three memorial tombs
for sea heroes, the copper choir fence and candle light define the historic
atmosphere. Cultural events like concerts, lectures and expositions regularly
take place. If you would like to attend this conference dinner, please,
register via the on-line registration form in order for us to make the
appropriate reservations.
