WiMBY! Event Summer 2007 will see completion of Loveliness Hoogvliet, an extraordinary leisure and recreation park on the northern fringe of Hoogvliet, with the cultural centre ‘The Villa’ as its radiating heart. The initiators, WiMBY!, will be taking this festive occasion as the opportunity to show both the inhabitants of Hoogvliet and domestic and foreign colleagues what other projects they have developed in Hoogvliet over the last seven years under the motto Welcome into My Backyard!
For this reason a large-scale event will be organised to accompany the
opening of ‘Heerlijkheid Hoogvliet’ in the June and July period,
to include exhibitions in Hoogvliet and Rotterdam, publications, debates,
festivities and excursions. This broad programme will not only provide an
overview of all the projects WiMBY! has generated and the motives behind
them, but will also offer an insight into the provisional results of the
radical restructuring operation that has taken place in Hoogvliet during
the same period. This event takes place during Rotterdam’s Year of
Architecture.

What is WiMBY!?
WiMBY! is an independent organisation set up in 2000 with the aim of raising
the large-scale reconstruction of postwar Hoogvliet to a higher level and
making it widely known internationally. WiMBY!’s programme is based
on the conviction that the enhancement, renewal and exploitation of Hoogvliet’s
existing characteristics and qualities, both physical and social, is the
best and most inspiring basis for the future of this postwar town. On the
basis of this conviction, and under the motto Welcome into My Backyard!,
WiMBY! has over the last seven years developed and realised a wide-ranging
series of experimental buildings, small-scale projects and joint ventures
in the fields of architecture, urban planning, art and socio-cultural projects.
